Vandals Drop Round 3 to Stallions
The Vandals, after finishing the 2009 regular season in the AFL 7-1 and securing First Place overall, lost 27-23 to the Edmonton Stallions in the playoffs. The Stallions then went on to win their second AFL Championship. It was the third year in a row the teams season was ended by the eventual league winner, and the Vandals are more than ready to claim an AFL Championship of their own in 2010.

Vandals Fall in AFL Championship
September 14, 2008
The Vandals played in their first AFL Championship Game on Saturday at McMahon Stadium in Calgary. Their opponents were the perennial AFL powerhouse Calgary Wolfpack. The Wolfpack took the regular season meeting between the teams 28-12 in August.
It was a beautiful night for football- sunny, warm, and clear with a slight breeze. The Wolfpack showed their experience by getting off to a fast start and forcing the Vandals to play from behind the entire game. It was a hard-fought, clean football contest throughout with some very exciting plays and moments, but the Vandals just could not capitalize on their chances enough to stay with the 'Pack's dominant offence. Wolfpack QB Darryl Leason had a very impressive game and showed why he is the premier QB in Senior Football. Unfortunately the Vandals came up short in their bid to capture an AFL Championship, losing 43-21.
Congratulations to the Wolfpack for winning their 13th AFL title and good luck to them in the CMFL Championship Sept. 27.

Travis Niekamp in Hospital
July 31, 2008
AFL Stats guru and honourary Vandal Travis Niekamp was seriously injured in an accident last week and is in a coma in Saskatoon hospital. Travis has been a part of the Vandals organization since Day 1 and his help has been a significant factor in our success. Travis' love of football is undeniable and he has served as the AFL's Stats Director for the past three seasons as well as coaching minor football in Lloydminster. The Vandals along with the entire AFL send our prayers and get-well wishes to Travis and his family during this difficult time. Travis is a fighter and we're all hopeful that he'll make a full recovery.

Vandals Keep Rolling
July 28, 2008
The Lloydminster Vandals welcomed the AFL's newest team to Armstrong Field on Saturday, as the Parkland Panthers came to town. Parkland (playing out of Spruce Grove) has been playing like a veteran squad this year, amassing a 4-1 record (1st in the AFL) coming into Saturday's game.
Despite the second straight week of dark clouds and a storm looming, the weather held out and didn't rain during the game. The Vandals had the look of a team who had never tasted first place and they weren't about to let the chance get away. In what was a hard-hitting and well-played game by both sides, the Vandals came up with a 38-17 win.
Full game story can be found here.
Record: 4-1 (tied for 1st in AFL)
Next game: August 9 @ Calgary Wolfpack (4-1, 1st in AFL) 4pm McMahon Stadium

Vandals Swashbuckle the Buccaneers
July 21, 2008
Stormy weather threatened the Bucs/Vandals game Saturday at Armstrong Field but never materialized. The Vandals took advantage of the weather reprieve to launch an offensive and defensive assault on the Bucs. Despite some very dark and stormy-looking clouds in the sky during the game, not a drop of rain fell and it turned out to be a nice afternoon for football.
Th Vandals Offence got things going with a 30-yard Brad Ollen field goal. However, RB Curtis Vetter crossed the plane soon after to make the score 10-0 for the home side in the 1st Qtr. The TD was set up by a spectacular 31-yard run from QB Jarred Valleau to keep the drive alive. The Bucs Defence was up to the challenge early as they limited the Vandals scoring despite several opportunities.
RB Vetter struck again on a 39-yard rushing TD in the 2nd Qtr. to make the Halftime score 17-0 Vandals.
In the 2nd Half the Vandals seem to find their stride on Offence and Defence as they pulled away from Red Deer. DB Dirk Treptow scooped up a fumble and took it 57 yards to the house for his 2nd straight fumble return TD in as many games! That was followed by another Ollen FG, this one from 45 yards. CB Brock Priebe snagged his 4th INT of the season and returned it 36 yards to set up a 6-yard TD pass from QB Trevor Townend to SB Jess Valleau. The scoring was rounded out by another TD pass, this time from Townend to SB Ken Fisher.
In the end it was a resounding Vandals win- Final 41-0. Red Deer showed great class and toughness by never quitting in what was a very physical and hard-hitting affair. The Vandals now prepare for what could be the game of the season- vs. the upstart Parkland Panthers who, in their first AFL season, currently lead the league!
Offence: RB Curtis Vetter 11 carries - 112 yards, 2 TD (10.1 yd avg) QB Trevor Townend 6-8, 65 yards, 2 TD
Defence: DB Dirk Treptow 5.5 tkls (4 solo), 2 KD, 1 fumble recovery for TD DB Grayson Wells 4.5 tkls (3 solo), 1 sack CB Brock Priebe INT (36 yds)
Specials: P/K Brad Ollen 5 punts, 39 yd avg. / 2-3 on FGs
Record: 3-1 (3-way tie for 2nd in AFL)
Next game: July 26 vs. Parkland Predators (4-1, 1st in AFL) 3pm @ Armstrong Field

Vandals Drill GP in Home Opener!
July 7, 2008
The Grande Prairie Drillers were in town Saturday for the Vandals first home game of the 2008 Season. The Drillers were off to a great start in '08 at 2-0 and had just come off of a big win versus the Calgary Wolfpack. The Vandals and Drillers came into the AFL the same year (2004) and had an even 2-2 record in their previous meetings.
The Vandals scored from every angle in this one- offence, defence, and special teams- on their way to a convincing 52-10 win over Grande Prairie. In front of the largest home crowd in their history, the Vandals came up with arguably their best effort as an AFL club.
The game story can be found here.
Record: 2-1
Next game: July 19 vs. Red Deer Buccaneers 3pm @ Armstrong Field

Vandals Grind Out Tough Road Win
June 15, 2008
Typical Calgary weather Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium as the Vandals faced the home-town Gators. With a bit of sun, cloud, rain, and wind the weather was variable and so was the play at times. Each team was coming off tough losses in their respective season-openers and desperately wanted a 1-1, not 0-2 record.
Calgary got off to strong start by winning the battle in field position and kicking a field goal for a 3-0 lead. Each team committed costly turnovers in this game- the Vandals gave up 2 INT, 1 fumble and had a couple of kicks blocked; the Gators gave up 3 INT and 2 fumbles. A repeatedly short field helped the Gators to a TD from hard-running RB Jacob Swainson, and a 10-0 lead.
The Vandals offense responded quickly with strikes from QB Trevor Townend to SB Ken Fisher for 55 yards and WR Andrew Herrick for an 10-yard TD. The Gators added another FG to make the halftime score 13-7.
The sloppy play continued in the 2nd Half and neither team was able to mount much of an attack. Both defences played well and limited the other teams' offensive chances. DHB Cole Payne wasn't feeling himself in this one but he got the usual results with 2 INTs. Brad Ollen kicked his 2nd field goal of the game with under 2 mins left to make the score 13-13. The teams traded possessions with each coming close but not able to score points. Finally, the Vandals offence led by QB Jarred Valleau found a way to keep the chains moving as the clock wound down with less than a minute remaining in the game. Brad Ollen scored the winning rouge by kicking a 35yd punt through the Gators end zone, and then picked off Ryan Zahara on the last play of the game to secure a huge road win for the Vandals. Final Score: 14-13
Record: 1-1
Next game: July 5 Home Opener vs. GP Drillers - 6pm Armstrong Field

Vandals Can't Solve The Stallions...Yet
June 9, 2008
It was a chance at retribution for the Vandals, as they opened their 2008 campaign with a visit to Clarke Park in Edmonton to face the Stallions. Edmonton knocked Lloydminster out of last year's playoffs with a 11-9 win, beginning the Stallions run of three straight road playoff victories on the way to their first AFL title. The Vandals started the game well by stopping the Edmonton offence in their own endzone for a safety and a 2-0 lead. The revamped Vandals offence then broke through for a 65-yard TD run by RB Curtis Vetter to lead 9-0. The Stallions answered on their next possession and the score was 9-7. After a single and a field goal, the Stallions held an 11-9 lead but the Vandals were marching. Just before halftime, the Vandals had first-and-goal from the Stallions 1-yard line but could not convert. Those missed opportunities would turn out to haunt the Vandals down the stretch. In the second half, the Vandals came out firing on offence and quickly scored to make it 16-11. The touchdown was set up by an outstanding play from Vandals QB Jarred Valleau, who scrambled to avoid the rush and found WR Justin Priebe for a big gain. Then only a few minutes later CB Brock Priebe, on his 3rd INT of the game, picked off a Stallions pass and sprinted 65 yards to the house to give the Vandals a commanding 23-11 lead. The Stallions offence, led by QB Kelly McBryan, came to life after that while the Vandals offence stalled. A passing TD to WR Grant Shaw followed by a rushing TD by McBryan gave the Stallions the lead with about 3 minutes to play. Despite a valiant effort by the Vandals offence including a few clutch 3rd down conversions in the last minute, the Stallions defence held on for a 25-23 win. Record: 0-1 Next game: June 14 @ Calgary Gators - 4pm McMahon Stadium
